The first time I saw Jerry fight fight live was the night he fought George Chuvalo at Madison Square Garden Friday December 12th 1969. I was fourteen years old and remember being thrilled to see Jerry up close.
From the opening bell Jerry was peppering Chuvalo with lefts and rights and by round six had Chuvalo's eyes almost shut. Then comes round seven and Jerry gets hit on the top of the head with a left hand and goes down,
but he's up at the count of one. Jerry takes a knee to take full advantage of the count and inexplicably gets up as ref Zack Clayton counts 10.
As a fan of Quarry, these twists of fate, became familiar territory.
Just when you thought things would go Jerry's way, there would be disappointment , and just when you thought he might be finished, he'd rise up and beat the newest contender.
The one constant you could always count on with Jerry was his tremendous heart,
in that regard he never disappointed.
